A Trio of Love: Welcoming Mabel, Smokey, and May Day!

Our hearts are overflowing with joy as we introduce you to three very special new residents 

of Rancho Burro: Mabel, Smokey, and May Day!

 This delightful trio arrived in March 2025, bringing with them a heartwarming story of love, devotion, and the search for a safe, forever home.

Mabel, a petite and gentle 24-year-old standard donkey mare, carries a legacy of love. She was once her owner's father's donkey, a precious link to cherished memories. When her owner faced a serious illness, she knew she had to make a difficult decision for her beloved animals. Though she had offers from friends, she deeply understood the specialized care donkeys require. She wanted a place where Mabel, Smokey, and May Day would be truly understood and cherished. Mabel is a quiet, kind soul, and her gentle spirit has already begun to brighten our sanctuary.

Smokey, a handsome 16-year-old standard donkey gelding, has a unique bond with his former owner. He had been with her since he was just 10 days old, forging a deep and lasting connection. When she faced a serious illness, she knew she had to make an incredibly difficult decision for her cherished donkeys. While friends offered to take them in, she understood the unique needs of donkeys and sought a sanctuary where Smokey, Mabel, and May Day would receive the expert care and unwavering love they deserved. Smokey is a curious and kind spirit, and his calm presence has already brought a sense of peace to our sanctuary.

And then there's May Day, a sweet and shy 17-year-old standard donkey gelding. He completes this loving family, adding his own gentle nature to the mix. Like his companions, May Day's owner wanted to ensure he would receive the best possible care.

Their owner's decision to entrust them to Rancho Burro was one of deep love and selflessness. We are honored to provide this gentle trio with a loving forever home.
