RIP Henry

Rescued with Gracie September 2018 - Passed September 2024

We're heartbroken to share the passing of our beloved Henry. He, along with his devoted companion Gracie, were two remarkable donkeys who touched our lives deeply.  These standard-size, ~20-year-old donkeys came to Rancho Burro after enduring a truly harrowing experience.

Rescued from a neglectful Creston ranch, their suffering was unimaginable.  Severely overgrown hooves left them crippled, and untreated dental issues caused painful mouth ulcers.  In their agony, they found solace only in each other.

Sadly, when Henry recently fell ill due to a heatwave, an incidental finding at the vet revealed stage 4 lymphoma.  He arrived home at Rancho Burro on a Monday and peacefully passed away on Wednesday, surrounded by his herd and the love of our team. Though his time with us was short, he experienced the kindness and compassion he had long been denied.

Henry was a quiet and shy soul, but incredibly kind.  Earning his trust was a true privilege, and those who did were rewarded with his gentle affection.  Gracie, his bonded partner and protector, is understandably lost without him.  Our team and the other donkeys are showering her with love and support as she navigates this difficult time.

Rest in sweet peace, dear Henry. You will forever be in our hearts.

Rescued with Rosie in April 2019

Bobo, a gentle 19-year-old mammoth donkey, recently joined our sanctuary after he and his friend Rosie lost their home. Sadly, their owner passed away, leaving Bobo and eight other donkeys neglected. Bobo has some skin issues and hoof problems from his time without care. Still, both are healing thanks to regular treatment and custom-fitted shoes from our friends at Eponamind using their innovative AI technology. We hear he was once a Rose Parade star, and now he's our official greeter, always first to welcome visitors with his kind spirit.
