Rescue, Rehabilitate, & Love

When a donkey arrives at Rancho Burro, their life of neglect ends, and their journey of healing begins. Rehabilitation is not a simple checklist; it is a profound daily commitment to restoring their physical health and their shattered trust. Here is an inside look at the lengths we go to for the donkeys.

The Foundation: Daily Care

Grooming & Comfort

Every day, we check for fresh scrapes, monitor vitals for any signs of isolation, and gently bathe donkeys who arrive itchy, matted, or dirty.

Hoof & Fly Care

From daily hoof picking and wrapping, to applying fly sprays and fresh fly masks, we ensure every animal is protected from the elements and comfortable.

Sanctuary Dynamics

Because donkeys bond fiercely, we carefully observe 'paddock politics' to ensure the sanctuary dynamics are safe and that bonded pairs are never separated.

Advanced Medical Intervention

Many arrivals require intense medical support. Beyond routine blood work, X-rays, and dental exams, we utilize advanced physical therapies. We frequently use electromagnetic Bemer Blankets and infrared wraps to promote cellular blood flow and provide deep muscle relaxation for senior or injured donkeys like Gracie.

Specialized Treatment Plans

Some donkeys require more specialized care to navigate complex, long-term health conditions. For example, shortly after arriving at the sanctuary, Wookie began showing severe signs of respiratory distress. After careful veterinary testing, he was diagnosed with Valley Fever in his lungs. Today, thanks to twice-daily nebulizer (inhaler) treatments and dedicated monitoring from our team, his inflammation is down, and he breathes easy again!

Mental Healing & Trust

Physical wounds often heal much faster than mental ones. Because donkeys are a ‘freeze or fight’ species rather than a flight species, those who have suffered past abuse do not just run away—they often completely shut down. Rehabilitation for these residents means providing a stable, non-threatening environment where they no longer feel the need to defend themselves.

Restoring a Broken Spirit

Rebuilding a broken spirit often takes more than just time; it requires a specialized approach of immense patience and gentle reassurance. For example, when Tutti arrived from a Texas kill pen, she was so deeply traumatized that we had to leave a lead rope dragging behind her just to get close. Through months of soft touches and quiet presence, we slowly proved to her that human hands are finally safe. Eventually, the terrified donkey who once wouldn’t let us near her learned to relax so deeply that she now falls asleep right in our arms.
