Peewee - The Ladies' Man
Peewee arrived at the sanctuary completely traumatized, unable to even understand how to drink water from a trough. As a smaller male, he was often bullied by the larger boys and spent his early days hiding quietly in the back.
Eventually, he found his confidence by bonding with a group of girls, earning the nickname 'The Tiny Bodyguard' for fiercely running interference at the fence line. Although he is hopelessly in love with all the girls, he remains completely devoted to his rescue companion, Rita.
Liberty - The Spokesperson
Liberty is the smallest but bravest member of the Texas 5 group, frequently acting as the bold spokesperson for her closely bonded pod. She arrived after a grueling twenty-four-hour trailer ride but quickly showed her remarkably sweet, puppy-like personality by backing up to sit on visitors' laps.
Liberty shares a very mutual and highly entertaining crush on Pepe. She can often be found hanging out by the fence line, actively trying to catch his attention and baiting him to come say hello.
Maxwell - The Lover Boy
Maxwell was rescued from a kill pen alongside seven other donkeys, arriving with terrible scars and abrasions covering his face. It took time, patience, and a lot of medical care for him to heal from the severe fly damage and neglect he endured.
Today, 'The Lover Boy' is feeling much better and actively showcases his enormous appreciation for the sanctuary's female residents. When he is not busy admiring the girls, he can usually be found hanging out with his good friend Rod.
Napoleon - The Mighty Miniature
Napoleon is a feisty miniature mule who stands barely three feet tall but carries a remarkably massive personality. He lives in the Tolerant Family pod alongside Mr. Ed, Pepe, and his absolute favorite resident, a large standard mule named Ginger.
As 'The Hopeful Boyfriend', Napoleon follows Ginger absolutely everywhere in a completely one-sided romance. He constantly gets swatted in the face by her long tail, but he happily accepts the physical rebuffs just to stay close to his lady.
Casanova - The Devoted Partner
Casanova came to the sanctuary with Dory after their elderly owner could no longer provide the necessary care. They narrowly avoided a terrible fate, as their previous caretakers had considered sending them to a zoo to be used as tiger food.
He is a deeply devoted partner to Dory, even nudging humans toward her when she is feeling unwell so she gets proper attention. Outside of his primary relationship, Casanova shares a wonderful friendship with Mr. Ed, and the two males frequently enjoy mutual grooming sessions.
Dory - The Brave Patient
Dory is Casanova's bonded partner, and the two of them are an inseparable pair who survived a very uncertain future together. Like Casanova, she successfully transitioned from a home with an older woman to the safety of the sanctuary herd.
Recently, Dory has been recovering from a significant accident, and she has proven to be an incredibly sweet and patient girl throughout her medical treatments. With Casanova always watching her back, she continues to make steady progress in her ongoing healing journey.
Gracie - The Faithful Partner
Gracie came from a situation of extreme neglect, arriving with horribly overgrown hooves and severe dental issues alongside her soulmate, Henry. Because they were so vulnerable in the wild, Gracie constantly stood in front of Henry to fiercely protect him from predators.
Sadly, Henry passed away from cancer, leaving Gracie as a faithful, grieving partner who still misses him terribly. Fortunately, Romeo stepped up as her silent guardian, gently keeping a watchful eye on her as she navigates life without her lifelong mate.
Romeo - The Silent Guardian
Romeo is an incredibly thoughtful boy who endured a botched gelding surgery before arriving, which left him isolated in a medical stall for months. Because he required so much hands-on care during his recovery, he inadvertently sparked a long-standing jealousy from his herd-mate, Norton.
Earning the title of 'The Silent Guardian', Romeo has a beautiful habit of stepping in to protect grieving members of the herd. He stood guard over Polly after she lost her companion, and he recently did the exact same thing for Gracie when she lost Henry.
Mabel - The Matriarch
Mabel arrived from a rescue situation in Morgan Hill alongside Smokey and Mayday, suffering from deformed feet due to years of sheer neglect. Because the three donkeys look so remarkably similar, it is highly suspected that she is actually their biological mother.
Serving as 'The Matriarch' of the Mellow Trio, Mabel brings a calming and gentle presence to her small, bonded family. She can often be seen quietly enjoying the sunshine and sharing sweet, mutual grooming sessions with Smokey.
Smokey - The Mellow Sibling
Smokey and Mayday were rescued alongside Mabel, arriving with incredibly damaged hooves and having never received proper dental care in their lives. Despite their rough beginnings, these mellow siblings are known for being exceptionally easygoing and kind to absolutely everyone they meet.
Their calm demeanor completely vanishes when mealtime approaches, as they are famously two of the loudest donkeys on the entire property. They love to stand outside with their heads over the stall doors, loudly demanding their breakfast and dinner from the sanctuary staff.

Elmer - The Teddy Bear
Elmer is a big, lovable guy with the most magnificent fuzzy ears, earning him the affectionate nickname of 'The Teddy Bear.' He came to the sanctuary alone after his previous owner could no longer manage his daily care needs.
Because he was quite isolated in his past life, he arrived very shy and remains famously terrified of the sound of rolling garbage cans. However, he has found great comfort in the herd and loves sharing quiet mutual grooming sessions with his good friend PJ.

PJ - The Cautious and Sweet Survivor
PJ arrived from a kill pen with a group of traumatized donkeys and was initially presumed to be several months pregnant. It turned out she was just carrying some extra weight, but her nervous and cautious demeanor remained a challenge for the staff.
Over time, this tall and sweet girl learned that she was finally safe and settled beautifully into sanctuary life. Now a very stable presence in the barnyard, she enjoys a peaceful friendship and regular spa-like grooming sessions with Elmer.
Mr. Ed - The Gentle Draft Giant
Mr. Ed is a large, gentle mule who suffered mistreatment for the vast majority of his life before finding his forever home. Despite his hardships, he is incredibly appreciative of human affection and will happily follow visitors around to beg for butt scratches.
He is a core member of the Tolerant Family, patiently coexisting with Ginger, Napoleon, and the overly enthusiastic Pepe. When he isn't hanging out with his pod, this friendly giant loves to trade mutual grooming favors with his buddy Casanova.

Flora - The Bestie
Flora and Blanca are a matched pair of white donkeys who arrived together as part of a terrified eight-donkey kill pen rescue. They both suffered from severe fly bites, patchy hair, and a deep-seated fear of human interaction.
While Flora has adjusted over time, Blanca remains deeply traumatized and is still very fearful when it comes to receiving medical care. Thankfully, these two 'Besties' have each other for constant emotional support as they slowly learn to trust their new environment.

Ginger - The Clever Escape Artist
Ginger is a beautiful standard-sized mule who possesses an incredibly kind heart and a dangerously clever mind. She is a notorious escape artist who uses her lips to untie knots, open complex latches, and happily let the rest of the herd out of their stalls.
As the object of Napoleon's intense affection, she patiently tolerates his constant shadowing, occasionally swatting him with her tail when he gets too close. Before joining the Tolerant Family pod, she shared a deeply profound friendship with Ruby, another beloved mule who has since passed away.

Alfie - The Lonely Cool Guy
Alfie arrived from a kill pen with a terribly raw chest caused by extreme fly damage and a severe lack of basic care. Because he was so quick to quietly follow the sanctuary staff around, it is highly suspected that he was once somebody's personal pet.
Now completely healed, 'The Lonely Cool Guy' floats around the sanctuary without belonging to any specific clique or bonded pair. He is wonderfully non-aggressive and serves as a low-drama friend to almost everyone he encounters in the barnyard.
Rosie - The Lonely Cool Girl
Rosie is a beautiful and very energetic white donkey whose previous owner passed away, leaving her to wander the local streets alongside her buddy Bobo. Eventually rescued and brought to the sanctuary, she quickly established herself as the resident track star who absolutely loves to run with gusto.
Following the tragic loss of Bobo, she was left to navigate the herd dynamics entirely on her own. Now known as 'The Lonely Cool Girl', this fast and fiercely independent donkey continues to win hearts with her sweet but spirited personality.
Rita — “The Flirt”
Rita arrived at the sanctuary from a kill pen alongside Peewee, having faced an incredibly tough start to life. Despite her difficult past, she blossomed into a deeply affectionate and highly social member of the herd.
Known affectionately as "The Flirt," she openly adores all the male donkeys and enjoys sharing her attention across the sanctuary. She still spends the majority of her time with Peewee, remaining fiercely loyal to her oldest friend.
Pepe — “The Trouble-Maker”
Pepe was rescued locally after being abandoned and tied to a tree in Nipomo without access to food or water. Having never been properly socialized around female donkeys before, his arrival at the sanctuary was an overwhelming experience—he basically went "crazy" with joy! He thought he had landed in heaven and was so overflowing with newfound romance that he threw himself at every single girl in sight (and famously, even directed his intense affection toward a large bag of pine bedding).
Now known as "The Trouble-Maker," this young troublemaker is still endlessly fascinated by the ladies, constantly shooting heart-eyes across the barnyard and playing hard with the other males. He shares a special, mutual flirtation with Liberty across the fence while living full-time with the "Tolerant Family" mule pod.

Norton - “The Jealous Romantic”
Norton was one of the sanctuary's earliest arrivals and absolutely loved having all the human attention to himself. When Romeo arrived and needed months of special medical care inside a stall, Norton turned into a bit of a "green-eyed monster." He would stand outside Romeo's stall and pout, acting very jealous of the extra care, though the two boys have since learned to share the spotlight and playfully wrestle.
Underneath his dramatic streak, Norton is actually incredibly kind, calm, and full of love for his favorite girls. He is a hopeless romantic and has a massive, very obvious crush on both Tutti and her bossy daughter, Bella! He proudly considers himself the lucky admirer of both beautiful ladies, showing that he has plenty of affection to go around when he isn't busy demanding scratches from the staff.
