The Mellow Sibling

Introduction

Smokey is a spirited, standard-sized donkey who arrived at Rancho Burro alongside his brother, Mayday, and their mother, Mabel. Because he shares an identical, striking resemblance to his mother, the family connection is undeniable. Smokey spent his early life enduring severe, long-term neglect on an out-of-town property where his owner fell ill with cancer. When he was finally rescued by our team, he was in terrible shape; his teeth had never been floated, and his front hooves had grown to shocking lengths, curling upward into bizarre shapes.

Conquering Past Fears to Find His Affectionate Side

In his past home, resources were scarce, and Smokey had to compete fiercely for nutrition. Because food buckets were simply hung on a fence line, he learned to protect his meals at all costs, a survival instinct that left him completely food-obsessed.

Initially, Smokey was deeply terrified of humans and would bolt away at any attempt to touch him. Through patient interaction and the dedication of our handlers, his walls completely broke down. Today, his fear is entirely gone; he has gained healthy weight, loves human attention, and will enthusiastically follow volunteers around the pasture as they do chores.

The Playful Window-Brayer and Herd Diplomat

Smokey has a wonderfully independent streak and loves to explore the sanctuary grounds on his own. He is incredibly smart and has put his clever mind to work alongside Ginger and Mayday, learning exactly how to manipulate metal gate latches. When he isn’t sneakily trying to unlock stall doors for late-night food raids, Smokey loves to shove his large head completely through the barn windows, braying at the top of his lungs to demand love and treats.

He is a remarkably mellow, neutral boy who easily integrates with any group, never getting into fights and spending his quiet moments head-to-tail with his mother, Mabel, for deep grooming sessions.

Before & After: Journeys of Hope

A look back at Smokey and Mayday right after arriving from Morgan Hill. Rescued alongside Mabel after surviving years of severe neglect without proper hoof or dental care, these two sweet boys stayed with each other for comfort and reassurance from the very first day of their sanctuary journey.

Standing tall, healthy, and completely content inside the barn! After undergoing intensive rehabilitative farrier care to correct his severely overgrown, horn-like hooves, Smokey has fully regained his comfortable footing. Today, his past fear has completely melted away, replaced by an easygoing demeanor and a deep love for his sanctuary family.

A beautiful afternoon at Rancho Burro as Smokey, Mayday and their fellow sanctuary companions graze freely across the rolling green hills. Having left behind their days of hardship and severe neglect, these gentle rescues now spend their days soaking in the warm Central Coast sunshine, surrounded by endless space, safety, and a true pasture family.
