The Gentle Leader

Introduction

Mayday is a standard-sized gray donkey who arrived at Rancho Burro alongside his brother, Smokey, and (their suspected mother), Mabel. He is a mirror image of his family, sharing their beautiful facial structures and long, fuzzy ears. Mayday’s rescue story began on an out-of-town property where his owner fell severely ill with cancer. Left in the hands of temporary caretakers who did not provide proper maintenance, Mayday suffered from extensive neglect. He arrived at our sanctuary with teeth in awful shape and drastically overgrown front hooves that had curled into wild, horn-like extensions.

A Gentle Transformation Born of Absolute Trust

Because he had to watch stronger animals take his mother’s food in his past home, Mayday developed a frantic obsession with meal times. When he first arrived, he would run wildly after caretakers carrying hay, screaming at the corral doors to ensure he wouldn’t miss out. He was completely terrified of human touch, bolting in panic whenever someone reached toward him. With infinite patience, gentle daily handling, and predictable meals, Mayday realized he was finally safe. Today, he has completely overcome his fears: he loves being brushed, leans peacefully into scratches, and walks politely beside volunteers during morning chores.

The Curious Window Infiltrator and Gate Escape Artist

While Mayday is a peaceful, non-aggressive boy who never gets into fights with other donkeys, he possesses a wonderfully naughty, independent spirit. He is highly curious and regularly wanders away from the main herd to investigate things on his own. Alongside his brother and Ginger, Mayday is part of our infamous gate-opening crew. He uses his dextrous lips to undo complex latches and slide open stall doors to throw late-night barnyard parties. He also loves to stand side-by-side with Smokey at the barn window, poking his face inside to bray dynamically whenever he senses a volunteer might have extra treats.

A look back at Smokey and Mayday right after arriving from Morgan Hill. Rescued alongside Mabel after surviving years of severe neglect without proper hoof or dental care, these two sweet boys stayed with each other for comfort and reassurance from the very first day of their sanctuary journey.

A beautiful afternoon at Rancho Burro as Smokey, Mayday and their fellow sanctuary companions graze freely across the rolling green hills. Having left behind their days of hardship and severe neglect, these gentle rescues now spend their days soaking in the warm Central Coast sunshine, surrounded by endless space, safety, and a true pasture family.
