Introduction

Pepe is a mischievous, highly entertaining 3-year-old standard donkey who has brought an explosion of youthful joy to Rancho Burro. This charming local rescue is the ultimate pasture wildcard, keeping our volunteers laughing with his high-energy antics and endless curiosity.

A Rescue Born of Urgent Need

Pepe found his solace at our sanctuary in March 2024 after a very precarious start to life. He had been effectively abandoned in a local junkyard by his original owner. While his temporary guardians cared deeply about his plight, they simply did not know how to properly care for a young, un-neutered donkey and responsibly reached out to our team for help.

Our team quickly stepped in to bring Pepe home, welcoming him with a spacious stall, a lifetime home, and the unconditional love of our volunteers. He quickly traded his rough past for a haven of healing, discovering what it truly feels like to be safe, valued, and a treasured part of an extended sanctuary family.

Finding His Pace in the Herd

Upon his arrival, Pepe underwent routine intake care and was officially gelded to curb his stallion instincts. Having never been properly socialized around other donkeys before his rescue, he basically went “crazy” with joy when he first saw the ladies, hilariously showering them all with constant heart-eyes!

Because he is still making up for lost time, Pepe has taken a little longer to fully integrate and is still learning how to self-regulate during playtime. He requires his own cozy stall for quiet meals and downtime, but he absolutely loves supervised pasture play with his donkey family. Every day, he figures out more about herd boundaries, showing a goofy spirit that has completely triumphed over his past adversity.

Pepe before coming to Rancho Burro. Though the severe neglect and facial injuries from his past life were clearly visible, his bright, intelligent eyes showed a true survivor's spirit—ready to trade his hardships for a lifelong haven of healing.
