The Brave Spokesperson
Introduction
Liberty is an exceptionally sweet and confident miniature donkey who serves as the proud, vocal spokesperson for the “Texas Five“. Standing as the smallest member of her closely bonded family pod, she possesses a remarkably bold, puppy-like personality and an immense curiosity that completely charms every visitor she meets.
Liberty’s path to the sanctuary was born out of a critical partnership with The Gathering Place Animal Rescue, a compassionate 501(c)(3) organization in Texas. When their facility reached maximum capacity, they reached out to Rancho Burro to save a deeply bonded family of five female donkeys: Love, Peppermint, Liberty, Star, and Bell. Liberty and her family endured a grueling twenty-four-hour trailer ride across state lines to safely reach their forever home in California.
Overcoming Injury and Finding Love
The exhausting cross-country trip was incredibly tough on her family. While the sanctuary team dedicated weeks to medical cleanup and rehabilitation, Liberty focused on settling into the pasture—where she quickly developed a massive, highly entertaining crush on Pepe! Known as a bit of a playful tease, Liberty can constantly be found hanging out by the fence line, purposefully backing up to catch Pepe’s attention and baiting him to come over and say hello.
The Smallest and the Bravest
Though she is little, Liberty carries a giant presence and an unwavering sense of bravery. She loves human connection so much that she will confidently walk right up to caregivers and happily back up to sit on your lap for attention! Whether she is leading her tight-knit family pod across the pasture or shooting heart-eyes through the fence at Pepe, Liberty represents the beautiful future of our sanctuary—a new generation that will only ever know absolute kindness.
