Meet Alfie
The Lonely Cool Guy
Introduction
Alfie is a handsome, long-legged standard boy who is estimated to be around six years old. He arrived at Rancho Burro as part of a final group of eight rescues delivered together from a crowded Texas kill pen. While he was a bit thin and carry a unique, deep brown coat that makes him look almost more like a majestic moose than a donkey, his incredibly sweet and gentle demeanor immediately stood out. Even from his first moments off the transport trailer, it was clear that Alfie was a special soul who was highly accustomed to human contact.
Healing from Fly Damage and Low-Grade Infection
Though he was cooperative, Alfie’s physical intake revealed a history of deep systemic neglect.
He arrived with a low-grade respiratory infection that caused his nose to run constantly, and his chest and underbelly were a raw wreck from severe, untreated fly bites. Because he appears to have a unique skin allergy to pasture bugs, our team immediately started him on antibiotics and outfitted him with a specialized, snug-fitting belly-band fly sheet to completely heal his raw skin.
While he is highly patient with his daily check-ups, he uniquely does not like his hooves messed with, suggesting a past handler may have been aggressive or lacked basic patience during his past trims.
The Barnyard's Neutral and Gentle Nudger
Once his physical wounds healed, Alfie’s true personality emerged, earning him the title of the sanctuary’s “lonely cool guy.” He doesn’t belong to any specific paddock clique, doesn’t instigate drama, and remains wonderfully non-aggressive, serving as a neutral friend to everyone he encounters.
He loves human connection so much that he has become a chronic face-nudger, using his long nose to playfully push and nudge your arm or shoulder whenever he desires attention or a tasty volunteer treat.
Alfie’s ideal happily-ever-after is incredibly simple: he is perfectly content spending his days grazing casually in the pasture and resting his head under the endless love of a cozy barn stall.
