The Teddy Bear Ears

Introduction

Elmer is a sweet 10-year-old donkey originally wild-caught through the Bureau of Land Management who recently arrived at Rancho Burro after a heartbreaking turn of events. Donkeys are deeply social herd animals that truly thrive in the company of other donkeys, and Elmer found himself at a crossroads when his familiar world suddenly changed.

Healing From a Sudden Loss

In just six short weeks, Elmer went from living happily in a herd of three to being completely alone. His owner’s horse unfortunately passed away, and shortly after, her niece took her own horse away. Though his owner tried her best to integrate him with smaller animals on the property, it just wasn’t the right fit for his emotional needs, and Elmer was understandably feeling incredibly lonely.

Recognizing his profound need for true equine companionship, his devoted owner made the selfless choice to reach out to Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary for help. While we typically focus our mission on rescuing abused, abandoned, and neglected donkeys with medical special needs, we felt an immediate, special connection with Elmer’s story. Having recently said goodbye to our beloved residents Henry, Chile, and Teddy, we had the open space and knew in our hearts that Elmer desperately needed a new home and a forever family.

Establishing a Foundation and Finding a Groom Buddy

Though Elmer was clearly well cared for physically in his previous home, our sanctuary veterinarians gave him a thorough, top-to-bottom check-up to establish a baseline for his health. Since settling in, Elmer has completely turned his loneliness around and formed a wonderful friendship with PJ. The two have become inseparable “groom buddies,” frequently spotted out in the pasture happily grooming one another and navigating their new world side-by-side.

Before & After: Journeys of Hope

A look back at sweet Elmer on his very first day arriving at the sanctuary. Though he arrived physically healthy, the profound loneliness of losing his previous equine companions left him cautious and quiet as he looked out at his new surroundings.

A wet and wonderfully clean Elmer right after enjoying a refreshing, soothing bath in the sanctuary's barn! Routine grooming, washing, and deep coat cleaning are huge parts of our everyday care, helping our residents shed the dirt of the pasture and stay completely comfortable.
