The Brave Miniature
Introduction
Wookie is a kind, gentle, and funny miniature donkey with a true survivor’s spirit. Because of his incredibly sweet and tolerant personality, the sanctuary team suspects he was once deeply loved as a child’s pet before falling on hard times.
His journey to safety was a daunting one; he was saved from a kill pen in Bowie, Texas, by All Seated in a Barn.
As a tiny miniature, Wookie endured a harrowing transport across Texas, Arizona, and California, riding in crowded trailers alongside much larger animals before finding a temporary foster home at Return to Freedom.
The Health Journey & "Appetite"
That long, cross-country journey left a lasting mark on little Wookie. Being so low to the ground with his nose always exploring the dirt, he was exposed to spores along the way and is currently being treated for Valley Fever.
He also arrived at Rancho Burro overweight due to being fed the wrong diet in his past life.
While the sanctuary works hard to get his waistline back in shape, his necessary antifungal medication actually increases his appetite! This has turned the clever little guy into a bit of a sneaky escape artist, known for wandering the barnyard to happily polish off his friends’ leftover meals.
The Protector of Fiona & PJ
Despite his small stature and health challenges, Wookie carries the biggest heart in the herd.
After initially struggling with loneliness, he formed an unbreakable bond with two larger female donkeys, Fiona and PJ, who also survived the Texas kill pens.
Today, Wookie acts as the brave protector and emotional anchor for his shy friends, staying constantly by Fiona’s side to help her heal from her past trauma.
With his cool, gentle nature and immense bravery, Wookie proves every day that true strength comes in the smallest packages as he settles into his forever home.
