Introduction
Romeo is a gentle, thoughtful 9-year-old standard donkey with a remarkably profound sense of empathy. Though his journey to the sanctuary began with a heartbreaking loss, he has blossomed into a beautifully reassuring, quiet presence who watches over the most vulnerable members of our herd
Romeo arrived at our sanctuary after his lifelong companion was tragically killed by a car on a local rural highway. Traumatized and distraught, Romeo refused to leave his side until the local police called our team to safely step in. Our founders patiently respected Romeo’s need to grieve and say goodbye before a friend with a rope helped bring this powerful, stressed boy to absolute safety.
A Journey of Grief and Healing
Once at the sanctuary, Romeo’s road to recovery faced another hurdle when a botched gelding surgery left him fighting a severe, long-term infection. He required months of intensive, hands-on care inside a medical stall to heal. This extra attention inadvertently sparked a hilarious, long-standing jealousy from his herd-mate, Norton! Fortunately, both boys have since learned to share the spotlight, and they love to playfully wrestle and coexistence as friendly rivals in the pasture today.
The Watchful Caretaker
Because of his own hardships, Romeo has developed an incredible ability to recognize trauma and grief in other donkeys. He earned his nickname, “The Silent Guardian,” by stepping in whenever a member of the herd is suffering.
When our sweet donkey Polly lost her companion, Romeo immediately stepped away from the herd to stand watch over her. Recently, he did the exact same thing for Gracie after she lost her soulmate, Henry. He checks on her constantly, standing vigil to ensure she never feels alone. Whenever a resident needs a little extra kindness, Romeo quietly answers the call.
