What is EJIAO?   Have you heard of it? 

E jiao is a gelatin created from the skins of donkeys which is used in traditional Chinese medicine, beauty, cosmetics, and other luxury products. Despite little evidence of its purported health benefits, demand continues to increase.

 The donkey skin trade for the production of ejiao, is decimating global donkey populations and harming impoverished global communities.

Studies have shown that the use of ejiao is unnecessary in the production of these products since the gelatins from other sources, including plants may be used instead.

Just as tigers were formerly one of the largest victims of the black market trade because of the belief that tiger parts had aphrodisiac qualities among other things, now donkeys are the target with catastrophic repercussions.

A dramatic increase in recent years of trade in donkey hides is driving demand for the widespread slaughter of these animals across Africa (with Kenya as the epicenter), Asia, and Latin America. As prices are driven upwards, black-market activities are also increasing, supplied by theft and illegal slaughter. 

The treatment of donkeys in this process is often gruesome and has a huge impact on the livelihoods of people. Donkeys are being stolen, horrifically mistreated and cruelly slaughtered—sometimes in the bush or street just outside their owners’ property. 

Not only are donkeys suffering and being killed at an unprecedented rate, but the loss of a donkey is crushing for the people who depend on these animals to survive. Families that lose a donkey can suffer colossal harm. The loss of a donkey for a family in an impoverished community can have devastating consequences on their ability to earn money, grow food, access water, and send children to school. Indeed, these setbacks can plunge an already poor family even deeper into poverty. 

EBay will not allow any sales of EJIAO and would love to see Amazon do the same.  Amazon sells many products containing EJIAO, and our sanctuary has removed our Amazon wish list from our website.

We no longer wish to support any institution that by agreeing to sell these products, can be understood to support the abuse and annihilation of donkeys.
