Meet Napoleon

The Mighty Miniature

Introduction

Napoleon (affectionately called Nappy) is a feisty, exceptionally spunky miniature mule who stands barely three feet tall but commands the pasture with a truly massive personality. Believed to be a cross between a miniature donkey and a Shetland pony, this little guy is a rare and remarkable soul. His journey to Rancho Burro was a long and exhausting one; he was originally saved from a crowded Texas kill pen, moved to multiple temporary rescues, and traveled hundreds of cross-country miles inside crowded transport trailers.

Overcoming Trauma to Reign Over Feed Bowls

Because he was constantly shoved around by handlers using heavy sticks and electric prods at the auction yards, Napoleon arrived at our gates terrified of humans and would run away like crazy if anyone stepped outside. When he first stepped off the trailer, Napoleon looked around with wide, anxious eyes, silently wondering if this would finally be the last place he would ever be sent.

With a lot of patience from our team, he slowly turned a corner, learned that he was completely safe, and blossomed into an approachable, confident little man who will now stand perfectly still to let you wrap your arms around his neck for pets.

Napoleon quickly adapted to pasture life by figuring out a brilliant, comical way to hold his own against the larger animals—he backs up into everything he wants to control. Despite his short legs, he is an absolute firecracker who will confidently back his rear end up toward a food bowl, kicking his heels to completely boss Mr. Ed, Ginger, and Pepe away from their meals.

A Hilarious and Unfazed Pasture Crush

Because his mother was a horse, Napoleon naturally identifies with horses far more than donkeys, which led to a hilarious, deeply devoted pasture crush on Ginger. He views her as his ultimate leading lady, waiting for her at the gate during feeding times and shadowing her every single step in a completely one-sided romance. Even though the giant mule constantly whips him in the face with her tail to keep him at a distance, a completely unfazed Napoleon takes the physical rebuffs in stride, happily accepting the tail-whips just to be close to his girl.

From a terrified kill pen survivor to the self-appointed king of the feed bowls, Napoleon carries a giant heart that proves true bravery has absolutely nothing to do with size.
