Meet Mr. Ed
The Gentle Draft Giant
Introduction
Mr. Ed is a magnificent, red-headed draft mule who stands as a massive, towering symbol of quiet resilience and deep gentleness.
Before finding his forever family at Rancho Burro, Mr. Ed endured severe mistreatment for the vast majority of his long life. As a heavy draft animal, he was worked brutally for decades, and when his aging body could no longer haul heavy loads, his owners simply abandoned him, leaving him to starve. He was ultimately discovered in a crowded holding pen by the rescue team at All Seated in a Barn, starving and nearly 400 pounds underweight with his ribcage and tailbones painfully jutting out through his coat. He narrowly escaped being shipped across the border to slaughter, a tragic fate common for senior draft animals where meat buyers pay strictly by the pound.
Shedding a Harsh Past Through Slow Affection
When this giant old boy first arrived at the sanctuary, his deep physical and emotional trauma was entirely evident. Decades of harsh, aggressive handling had left him terrified of flashlights and sudden, quick movements near his face, causing him to flinch in panic if a halter or fly mask was brought out too quickly.
Initially hesitant, Mr. Ed stood quietly in the arena, watching the transport trucks drive away as if expecting the worst. Yet, with slow, glacial movements and unconditional love from our staff, he turned a massive corner. He completely shed his fears to reveal an incredibly sweet, people-loving soul who now eagerly follows visitors around the pasture to beg for attention, stretching out his huge neck to soak up deep body massages and shoulder rubs.
Specialized Care and a Safe Harbor Stance
Now approaching 30 years old, Mr. Ed requires specialized, dedicated care to navigate his golden years comfortably. Because of a lifetime of neglect, a thorough dental check-up revealed that his teeth are completely flat and misaligned, making it physically impossible for him to chew standard pasture grass. To keep his weight up, our team provides him with a specialized, highly nutritious grain-fed diet of up to 30 pounds of Stable Mix a day. He also struggles with chronic dry, itchy skin and low-grade systemic inflammation, which we treat with daily therapeutic grooming and deep tissue physical therapy.
Though most of the smaller donkeys are initially intimidated by his massive size, Mr. Ed has found an inseparable mutual grooming buddy in Casanova, standing head-to-tail at the fence line to blissfully scratch each other’s backs.
