The Matriarch of the Trio

Introduction

Mabel is a standard-sized donkey born in 2001 who arrived at Rancho Burro after surviving a devastating case of long-term neglect. She was rescued from an out-of-town property alongside two other donkeys. The owner had fallen severely ill and was forced to rely on neighbors who failed to provide proper care. When our team arrived, Mabel was in such critical condition that if she had been left there any longer, she would not have survived.

A Dramatic Turnaround from Severe Injury

Upon intake, Mabel suffered from severe hoof and ligament damage, leaving her right front hoof and right front leg drastically impaired. Her fetlock was dropped incredibly low to the ground, making movement deeply painful. Because her past owner fed the herd by hanging buckets on a fence line, the stronger donkeys would routinely steal her food, leaving her dangerously malnourished. Initially, she was completely terrified of humans and would run away at any attempt to touch her. Due to her intense pain and immobility, she developed a “snapping turtle” tendency, snapping and biting like a defensive dog if anyone got too close.

Through intensive rehabilitation, Mabel has made a stunning recovery. Our sanctuary partnered with Epona to fit her with specialized therapeutic Epona shoes, and regular farrier adjustments have successfully corrected her leg alignment, giving her a normal-looking stance. She undergoes daily physical therapy utilizing a specialized Beamer blanket and daily Bute-less supplements to safely manage her comfort.

Reclaiming Her Strides and Joy

Mabel’s incredible healing journey is shared alongside her bonded family pod—Smokey and May Day. Rescued together as a cohesive trio from Morgan Hill, the two younger boys share such an uncanny resemblance to Mabel that she is affectionately recognized as the matriarch (and suspected mother) of the group. While the two mellow boys can get along with anyone in the pasture and are famously known for being the loudest greeters demanding their meals at breakfast and dinner, they remain Mabel’s closest circle. She can often be seen sharing sweet, peaceful mutual grooming sessions with Smokey under the warm sun.

Today, Mabel is an entirely transformed, happy girl who has gained healthy weight, completely stopped snapping, and confidently marches away on her own path whenever she pleases, fully supported by her loving family.
